A light drizzle was falling as my sister Jill and I ran out of the Methodist Church, eager to get home and play with the presents that Santa had left for us and our baby sister, Sharon. Across the street from the church was a Pan American gas station where the Greyhound bus stopped. It was closed for Christmas, but I noticed a family standing outside the locked door, huddled under the narrow overhang in an attempt to keep dry. I wondered briefly why they were there but then forgot about them as I raced to keep up with Jill.j2n小梦文库

Once we got home, there was barely time to enjoy our presents. We had to go off to our grandparents' house for our annual Christmas dinner. As we drove down the highway through town, I noticed that the family was still there, standing outside the closed gas station.j2n小梦文库

My father was driving very slowly down the highway. The closer we got to the turnoff for my grandparents' house, the slower the car went. Suddenly, my father U-turned in the middle of the road and said, "I can't stand it!"j2n小梦文库

"What?" asked my mother.j2n

"It's those people back there at the Pan Am, standing in the rain. They've got children. It's Christmas. I can't stand it."j2n小梦文库

When my father pulled into the service station, I saw that there were five of them: the parents and three children - two girls and a small boy.j2n

My father rolled down his window. "Merry Christmas," he said.j2n小梦文库

"Howdy," the man replied. He was very tall and had to stoop slightly to peer into the car. Jill, Sharon, and I stared at the children, and they stared back at us.j2n小梦文库

"You waiting on the bus?" my father asked.j2n

The man said that they were. They were going to Birmingham, where he had a brother and prospects of a job.j2n

"Well, that bus isn't going to come along for several hours, and you're getting wet standing here. Winborn's just a couple miles up the road. They've got a shed with a cover there, and some benches," my father said. "Why don't y'all get in the car and I'll run you up there."j2n小梦文库

The man thought about it for a moment, and then he beckoned to his family. They climbed into the car. They had no luggage, only the clothes they were wearing.j2n

Once they settled in, my father looked back over his shoulder and asked the children if Santa had found them yet. Three glum faces mutely gave him his answer.j2n

"Well, I didn't think so," my father said, winking at my mother, "because when I saw Santa this morning, he told me that he was having trouble finding all, and he asked me if he could leave your toys at my house. We'll just go get them before I take you to the bus stop."j2n小梦文库

All at once, the three children's faces lit up, and they began to bounce around in the back seat, laughing and chattering.j2n

When we got out of the car at our house, the three children ran through the front door and straight to the toys that were spread out under our Christmas tree. One of the girls spied Jill's doll and immediately hugged it to her breast. I remember that the little boy grabbed Sharon's ball. And the other girl picked up something of mine. All this happened a long time ago, but the memory of it remains clear. That was the Christmas when my sisters and I learned the joy of making others happy.j2n小梦文库

My mother noticed that the middle child was wearing a short-sleeved dress, so she gave the girl Jill's only sweater to wear.j2n

My father invited them to join us at our grandparents' for Christmas dinner, but the parents refused. Even when we all tried to talk them into coming, they were firm in their decision.j2n

Back in the car, on the way to Winborn, my father asked the man if he had money for bus fare.j2n

His brother had sent tickets, the man said.j2n小梦文库

My father reached into his pocket and pulled out two dollars, which was all he had left until his next payday. He pressed the money into the man's hand. The man tried to give it back, but my father insisted. "It'll be late when you get to Birmingham, and these children will be hungry before then. Take it. I've been broke before, and I know what it's like when you can't feed your family."j2n小梦文库

We left them there at the bus stop in Winborn. As we drove away, I watched out the window as long as I could, looking back at the little gihugging her new doll.j2n

I would often get up early to watch the sunrise when it was not yet quite light and all was quiet except for the droning of the ship engine.j2n

The sky was pale with a bluish hue. Soon a streak of pink dawn broke over the horizon, expanding gradually and becoming brighter and brighter. Knowing that the sun was about to rise, I had my eyes fixed on the distant edge of the sea.j2n小梦文库

1,“还没有大亮”=be not quite light,在《看月》中,有个“没有‘断黑’”= is not yet quite dark,“大亮”“断黑”都是程度副词+形容词的结构,通常用quiet+adj结构j2n小梦文库

2,“机器的响声”译为the droning of the ship engine.。

4,“天边”是指海天交接之处,即“地平线”,译为the horizon,之后的“那里”文中处理为the distant edge of the sea,避免了重复j2n小梦文库

5,“一道红霞”也可译为a streak of rosy dawn或a rosy streak of dawnj2n小梦文库

As expected, the sun soon appeared revealing half of its face, which was very red but not bright. It kept rising laboriously bit by bit as if weighted down with a heavy burden on its back until, after breaking through the rosy clouds ;it completely emerged from the sea aglow with a lovely red. Then, before I knew it, the dark red orb began to shine blazingly, dazzling my eyes until they stung and all of a sudden lighting up the surrounding cloud.j2n小梦文库

It kept rising laboriously bit by bit as if weighted down with a heavy burden on its back…

译为before I knew it, the dark red orb…,其中before I know it (或before I know where I was, before I was aware of it)在此意为“一刹那间”,此处译者并没有译为in the twinkling of an eye,或者soonj2n小梦文库

4,“颜色红得非常可爱”即“发出可爱的红光”译为be aglow with a lovely red,aglow意为“发亮的,发红的”j2n小梦文库

5,”射得人眼睛发痛“译为dazzling my eyes until they stung,其中until在此意为”以至于…”j2n小梦文库

Sometimes, hidden by the clouds, the sun nonetheless shed its rays straight onto the sea water, making it difficult for me to distinguish between the sky and the sea because what I saw in front of me was nothing but a wide expanse of brilliant light.j2n小梦文库

3,此句 译 文 中有 3处 使 用 了 头 韵 : sun/ shed / straight /seawater 、 difficult和distinguish、 s k y 和 s e a 。

4,the sun nonetheless shed its rays straight onto the sea water中 , 将 原 文 “ 光线从云里射 下来 ”“ 直射到水面上 ” 两个动作合译,读起来一气呵成,流畅自然~后面直接用making连接两个句子,也体现了原文的简洁j2n小梦文库

Sometimes, with thick layers of dark clouds hanging in the sky, the sun was hardly visible to the naked eye. But its radiance managed to show through the dark clouds to edge them with golden lace. Then, after gradually breaking through the tight encirclement, it came into full view and even dyed the dark clouds purple or scarlet. At the moment, apart from the sun,the clouds and the seawater, I too was luminous.Wasn't that a marvelous spectacle?j2n小梦文库

译为“ t h e s u n w a s h a r d l y v i s i b l e t o t h e n a k e d e y e ” , 符合英语行文。

2,“透过黑云”此处译为managed to show through the dark clouds,用penetrate也可以,从上文的emerge到这里的manage to do,译者运用大量人性化的动词,将原文的“拟人化”的手法表现得淋漓尽致~j2n小梦文库

At the moment, apart from the sun,the clouds and the seawater, I too was luminous.

If you want your life to stand for peace and kindness, it’s helpful to do kind, peaceful things. One of my favorite ways to do this is by developing my own helping rituals.j2n

We live in a rural area of the San Francisco Bay Area. Most of what we see is beauty and nature. One of the exceptions to the beauty is the litter that some people throw out of their windows as they are driving on the rural roads.j2n小梦文库

One of the few drawbacks to living out the boondocks is that public services, such as littercollection, are less available than they are closer to the city.j2n

A helping ritual that I practice regularly with my two children is picking up litter in our surrounding areas. We’ve become so accustomed to doing this that my daughters will often say to me inanimated voices, "There’s some litter, Daddy, stop the car!"j2n小梦文库

And if we have time, we will often pull over and pick it up. It may seem strange, but we actually enjoy it. We pick up litter in parks, on sidewalks, practically anywhere. Once I even saw a complete stranger picking up litter close to where we live. He smiled at me and said, "I saw you doing it, and it seemed like a good idea."j2n小梦文库

Picking up litter is only one of an endless supply of possible helping rituals. You might like holding a door open for people, visiting lonely elderly people in nursing homes, or shoveling snow off someone else’s driveway. Think of something that seems effortless yet helpful. It’s funny, personally rewarding, and can be a good example. And everyone benefits.j2n小梦文库
